Oral Sedation
Oral sedation uses a prescribed medication taken before your appointment to help reduce anxiety and promote a relaxed, drowsy feeling. You remain responsive and able to communicate, but many patients feel less aware of time and dental sensations during treatment. Oral sedation is often used for longer appointments, patients with dental fear, a strong gag reflex, or anyone who wants a calmer, more comfortable experience.

Benefits: A Calmer, More Comfortable Dental Visit
Helps reduce dental anxiety and fear: Oral sedation can take the edge off nervousness and help you feel more in control. Many patients describe feeling calm, heavy-eyed, or “floaty” during treatment. This can make it easier to get the care you need without stress.
Supports a more comfortable, pain-free experience: Oral sedation helps you relax while local anesthetic keeps the treatment area numb. When your body is less tense, dental care often feels easier and more tolerable. Many patients report the appointment feels smoother from start to finish.
Makes longer visits feel shorter: With oral sedation, time can feel like it passes more quickly. You may remember very little about the details of the appointment. This is especially helpful for procedures that would otherwise feel overwhelming.
Helpful for sensitive gag reflex or difficulty sitting still: Some patients struggle with gagging, jaw fatigue, or staying relaxed in the chair. Oral sedation can reduce tension and make it easier to keep your mouth open comfortably. This can improve the experience for both you and the dental team.
May allow more treatment to be completed in fewer visits: When you’re relaxed, it can be easier to complete multiple procedures in one appointment. This can reduce the number of visits you need and help you get back to routine faster. It’s a great option for busy schedules and more complex treatment plans.
Process: What to Expect With Oral Sedation
Consultation and medical history review: We begin by discussing your anxiety level, treatment needs, and what you’ve experienced in past dental visits. We review your health history, medications, and any conditions that could affect sedation. This ensures oral sedation is a safe and appropriate option for you.
Sedation plan and instructions: If oral sedation is recommended, we’ll explain what medication will be used and what to expect before, during, and after your appointment. You’ll receive clear instructions about eating, drinking, and timing your dose. We’ll also confirm that you have a responsible adult to bring you to and from your visit.
Taking the medication before your appointment: You’ll take the prescribed medication at the directed time before arriving (or as instructed). As it takes effect, you’ll begin to feel calmer and more relaxed. Everyone responds a bit differently, and we’ll tailor the plan to your comfort and safety.
Comfort-first treatment with local anesthesia: When you arrive, we’ll check in and make sure you’re feeling relaxed and ready. Local anesthetic is still used to keep treatment pain-free, while oral sedation helps reduce anxiety and tension. Our team monitors you closely and keeps communication simple and supportive throughout.
Recovery and post-visit support: After treatment, you may feel drowsy for several hours and will need someone to drive you home. We’ll review aftercare instructions and answer any questions before you leave. Rest is typically recommended for the remainder of the day.
Follow-up and planning future visits: If additional treatment is needed, we’ll plan it in a way that keeps you comfortable and confident. We’ll also review how the sedation went and adjust the approach if needed. The goal is to make every future visit feel easier and more positive.
